At dinner Erin made a cake with the Mexican flag on it: a big hit! She put the whole day together with the patience of a saint. She is truly a remarkable young woman who consistently shows these children (and us) the love of Christ. I wish we could find the words to adequately describe the staff members here, but you will just have to visit and meet them for yourself.
We celebrated Danielle and Kelli's 13th birthday this week. Our babies are teenagers! The highlight of their day was being allowed to have their own facebook! The Saturday before, the girls all went to the States for hamburgers and shopping. This was our first time crossing the border without Ruben God was gracious and we were not stopped at the border or by the federalies (guys with machine guns who stop you in the street).
Ruben has been very busy learning his responsibilities and hosting guests. He is well suited for the position and is enjoying himself.
Robin has had a very interesting week. Early in the week one of her students fell out of his desk, curled up in a fetal position with something black pouring out of his mouth. She saw Ray, one of the dorm dads, outside and yelled for him and then got on the phone to call for Ruben (our resident EMT). Ray was very cool as the student clutched his throat as though he were choking. He had already noticed what Robin had not: the inside of an empty pen on the floor. The student had been playing with his pen and had inhaled its contents. This particular student has been the fighter in class and has made teaching difficult. But, yesterday he told Robin that he wasn't going to fight anymore because he wants to be a man of God. This same student nearly knocked a table over in the dining hall tonight because he wanted to show Robin and a student who had just arrived, the math problem (subtraction, borrowing with zeros) that he could do. It was as though the light had come on while he was playing outside and he just had to show his teacher. His name is Alexis and we would ask that you pray for him and the commitment that he has made to be a man of God. That is why we are here!
Christopher went on his first rescue run today! A rolled-over SUV on a dirt road near the ranch. He helped the ambulance personnel get a patient in the ambulance. Ruben helped to get a woman out of the car and put a c-spine on her. The fire/rescue station is just down the street and they seem to stay very busy. Ruben hasn't had a chance to go to the station and introduce himself yet, but they do seem to appreciate the help.
Micaela continues to make her parents very proud. She is a huge blessing to the youngest class. She helps with classroom management, teaches small groups, and even read a book in Mexican sign to the class. She is picking up Mexican sign so much faster than Robin who sometimes uses her as an interpreter!
We are learning so much about the deaf of Mexico and their culture. There are so few who are ministering to this unreached people group, but the workers are even fewer in nations who do not share our border. Luke has been asked to visit Haiti to help with a deaf ministry there. An hour and a half from the capitol there is an orphanage/school with 12 students and one teacher. He is hoping to take supplies and be an encouragement and a resource for the staff in the small town and in the larger school for the deaf in Port-au-Prince. Please pray for funding and a successful trip.
We are so blessed to be here and appreciate your prayers more than you can know.
Ruben, Robin, Micaela, Christopher, Danielle and Kelli
